A flow meter is a device that determines the volume or mass of a gas or liquid. Flow meters are known by various names depending on the business, including flow gauge, flow indicator, liquid metre, flow rate sensor, etc. They all, however, measure flow. Flow meters can measure open channels such as rivers or streams.
What Type of Flow Meter is Best?
No "universal" flow meters can be used in all applications. Each meter type usually has trade-offs; therefore, knowing the relevant specs is essential.
Things you must know:
- What is the Gas or Liquid being measured?
- Minimum and maximum flow rates.
- What are the accuracy requirements?
- The fluid temperature and viscosity.
- Fluid compatibility with the construction materials.
- The maximum pressure at the location.
- What pressure drop is allowable?
- Is the meter mounted in a hazardous location where explosive gases may be present?
- Is the fluid flow continuous or intermittent?
- What type of output signal or readout do you need?
Maintaining a Flow Meter
Various factors influence flow meter maintenance requirements and life expectancy. The most important component, of course, is matching the appropriate instrument to the specific application. Poorly chosen devices will usually cause problems at an early stage. Flow meters with no moving parts require less maintenance than devices with moving parts. Nonetheless, all flow meters require repair at some point.
